European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
